# ChurchSurface

## The problem, in two parts
People increasingly ask AI assistants where to go to church rather than
searching for one. Two distinct failures follow, and neither is visible to the
church.

1. **Absence.** Asked to recommend churches nearby, or churches with a good
   children's program, the assistant returns a list the church is not on, even
   when it is the closest and best fit. This is the larger loss: a wrong
   service time costs a visitor who already knew the church's name, while
   absence costs one who was never going to learn it.
2. **Error.** When the church does appear, the details are often drawn from
   pages nobody has updated in years: service times that changed, an address
   from before a building move, a phone number that rings nowhere, kids and
   youth ministry listed for the wrong ages or missing, ministries long since
   ended alongside new ones nobody knows about.

## The three levels
The service is offered at three levels. Each takes more of the work off the
church's staff than the one before it, and each costs more than the one before
it. A church starts wherever suits it and moves up when it is ready.

**Level one: Found.**
The church is in the answer and everything in it is true. ChurchSurface audits
what the assistants say, corrects it, and publishes the church's service times,
location, contact details, kids and youth ministry, ministries and public
events as structured data on the church's own site, kept in step with its
Google listing. The record is re-checked monthly and corrected where it has
drifted. Events carry real dates, locations and an expiry, so a past event
comes down on its own rather than lingering as a stale answer. Each month the
church receives a one page summary: the questions asked, whether it appeared
and where, what was wrong, what was corrected, and how that compares with the
month before.

**Level two: Connected.**
The church's management system does the updating. ChurchSurface connects to
Planning Center, with Breeze and others to follow, so events the staff already
mark public flow out on their own and the record follows what is in the ChMS
rather than waiting on somebody to pass it along.

**Level three: Welcomed.**
People take the next step inside the conversation. A parent asking an assistant
about the church's VBS registers their child there, into the church's Planning
Center, without finding a form or making a second visit. Three conditions hold
for every registration: a person at the church sees and confirms it before it
counts, no child's information is stored by ChurchSurface, and the church can
switch it off for any event or entirely.

## What we deliberately do not claim
We cannot measure how many people asked an assistant about a given church.
Assistants do not publish query volumes and no vendor has access to them. What
is measurable, and what the monthly report contains, is what the assistants say
when asked a fixed set of questions, and whether that improves over time. Any
claim of AI query volume for a specific church should be treated as unfounded.

## Verification
Claiming a church page requires verification that the claimant speaks for the
church. That check is what makes the record worth trusting downstream, and it
is free. Ranking is never sold.

Church data on this domain is intended to be crawled, cited, and used to answer
questions about churches, service times, ministries, and public events. A
structured directory and a public API are planned, not yet available.
